Every once in a while, Rosie Roo writes something that makes me do a double-take. I was cleaning out her backpack a few weeks ago and stumble upon a piece of paper. There I found some pretty powerful words for a 9 year old. And, by chance, I captured those words in a photograph just the day before. Are you ready? My little love wrote, “The wind tickles my face...cold like an ice cube...and I breathe in the freshness.” When I asked her to tell me about it, she went on to say she was inspired by a book she was reading and the red leaf pile she raked with her brother Jack. That’s when my teacher heart went THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. And my mama heart? Well, it almost burst. #growinguptrusty
Katie chose to spend her special one-on-one day at the happiest place on earth. Disney World! She conquered her first roller coaster, ate a giant carmel apple, and soaked up the carnival like atmosphere. Her favorite ride was The Mad Tea Party...followed closely by Dumbo! I loved watching her press her nose against the bakery case — choosing the perfect confection. Swinging a popcorn bucket while waiting for The Pirates of the Caribbean. But my favorite...dinner at The Beast Castle. Her little mouth popped open when it started to snow. #katiehui #growinguptrusty
Here you have it, folks! The 2018 Anna Maria Island clam eating champion! Jack barely snagged the win, with Kate hot on his heels, but he eventually walked away with the title and trophy! So, how many fried clams did this kid throw down? We lost count but it was enough to need a little hammock rest before hitting the beach in the afternoon. *Random Tidbit: If you have ever wondered what my dad looks like — well, exactly like this! #growinguptrusty #justjack #undefeatedchampion
Who chipped a tooth on vacation? Well, that would be Bear. The horseplay got a little out of hand and a small bit of his front tooth broke off. Thank goodness kids come with two sets of chompers! #growinguptrusty
Guess who got to squeeze her best friend on the beach? Yup — Kate! It’s always a good time when these China sisters reunite. And a busy time, too. You see, Kate and Jewel have been cut from the same mischievous cloth! Trying to photograph them together is nearly impossible but a challenge Jewel’s mama and I happily take on. In a million years I would have never guessed that when we welcomed Kate into our family, we were adding the Christakos family, too. We love them to China and back and are thankful for the unexpected blessing of their friendship and love. *When I showed Kate the first picture she said, “Oh, wow! Look at us. We’re so beautifus!” #growinguptrusty #kateandjewel
We are back from the beach with tan lines and sweet memories. This trip was special for so many reasons. Unplugged family time. Hours spent with special friends. Late night laughs and special one-on-one and/or buddy experiences. After I finish cleaning the sand from the car, I will get to work retrieving photos. I can’t wait to show you what kind of mischief we cranked up! Who chipped a front tooth? Who snorkeled with manatee? Who was tall enough for a roller coaster ride? Who swam with dolphins? And the big one....who was crowned the 2018 clam eating champion of the year! It was a real nail-biter, my friends! #growinguptrusty #travelingtrustys
Rosie recently told me she wasn’t sure she wanted to go to college anymore...her true passion was baking. I told her I understood being driven by passion and the desire to create. I get that - I really do. So imagine my shock when she smiled and replied, “Good. Then you won’t take it so hard when I move to France to become a pastry chef.” After picking up my chin, I took the opportunity to remind her about the agonizing 4 months of bedrest I endured while trying to carry her full term. She wasn’t phased. So, I pulled out the big guns and reminded her about the dinner oath. Yes, you heard me right...dinner oath. On a regular basis I have the littles state their full name while holding their right hand up in the air. Next comes the bit where they promise to return home every Sunday for dinner for The. Rest. Of. Their. Lives. It’s clear now that Rosie isn’t taking the oath seriously and is moving to France. #growinguptrusty
Mom’s eye view....kinda like bird’s eye view but only better. #growinguptrusty #katiehui #candidchildhood #childhoodunplugged
Today is the first official day of Fall and Indiana is cooperating! The Trustys (along with every other Hoosier) migrated to the orchard for apples...enough for pies, cobblers and sauce! The air was crisp, the skies overcast and the fruit - deliciously sweet. Somewhere between fresh apples and homemade donuts, we raced down rows, climbed a fence and explored a neighboring soybean field. #growinguptrusty #appleseason #sweethomeindiana @candidchildhood
I have no idea what “Ed Sheeran” did, but it looks like he got an ear full! It also looks like his listening skills could use some fine tuning!
Jack is holding onto Summer with both hands! My little buddy, who wishes to be called Coyote, has been outside since 9am catching frogs, identifying bugs, trapping bees, and exploring the creek bed behind the house. He’s been “boy-ing” all day with no end in sight. #growinguptrusty #justjack @coyotepeterson @bravewilderness
What a special night for Rosie...her first concert shared with a best friend! #growinguptrusty #nolaandstella #taylorswift
Rosie and I were made for adventure — wanderlust so deep in the soul it’s almost impossible to stay put. Head on over to the blog (trustypartyofsix.com) for Rosie’s first trip to France. Hang with me as I dig out my blogging hiatus to celebrate a tiny girl in a red beret. #growinguptrusty #rosieroo 📷 credit @dennistrusty
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my favorite guy! Dennis turned 39 today and the kids are working on something extra special ...1 fever. 1 sick stomach. 1 fading fast. His birthday plans have been canceled and replaced with a night of Disney movies in the pit of misery — our bedroom, where small, germ infested people congregate and commiserate.
I was just sitting here thinking how I could salvage his special day and the doorbell rang. Dennis sent a delivery of supplies to the infirmed and some lunch for the nurse. Kinda got me thinking...we should celebrate this guy more than once a year! #growinguptrusty #happybirthday #39ismightyfine
That ear of sweet corn was no match for us! Rosie and I take ours dipped in butter and sprinkled with salt. We also take it wrapped around hotdogs and deep fried. #indianagirls #growinguptrusty #indianastatefair
We took on the state fair today! Lots of animals. Lots of treats. Lots of sticky hands and smiles. Jack had his first elephant ear and challenged himself to eat deep fried jalapeños! He walked over 5 hrs before his little legs gave out. #growinguptrusty
Back To School for 5 out of 6 Trustys! I’m not sure where Summer went, but it was a yummy one! I will try to catch up in the next few weeks with all of our warm weather adventures. But for now...Jack (1st grade and sporting glasses), Will (preschool), Nola (3rd grade and super blonde) and last but not least, Kate! “Biggie Smalls” started kindergarten and is just a few doors down from my classroom! ❤️❤️❤️ #growinguptrusty
Three years. That’s how long I’ve been this little man’s forever mama. I was in love the moment I heard his name. Before I saw a picture. Before I heard about his past. It was his name. A baby named Bear. I waited all day to share the news with Dennis. When he got home from work, I told him about the surprise phone call, little man’s name and then held my breathe and waited for his reaction. Katie came home just 6 months before and I wasn’t sure how he would feel about back to back adoptions. He quietly walked to his office, sat down and opened his email. There was one small photograph. He barely glanced before saying...”Mama, that’s a good looking little man.” Well my friends, the rest is history and Bear became a Trusty three years ago today. *Photo taken in Zhengzhou China, 2015.
Almost a year ago, Granny B surprised my children with a stray kitten. Fun, right? The only issue... she didn’t talk to Dennis or I about this special gift. She told us it was spayed and the finder thought it was ready for a family. Granny volunteered us! How thoughtful. After Dennis and I finished arguing about who was going to tell her “No way..this wasn’t going to happen” we packed up our new kitten, along with our very happy children, and drove home from the farm. Days later, the kitty was knocking on death’s door with all 4 paws. Our veterinarian neighbor told us Princess Peaches probably wouldn’t make it through the weekend. Our very giddy children crumbled to pieces and begged us to do something for the cat. Dennis reluctantly volunteered and spent the next 6 weeks (and hundreds of dollars) nursing the quarantined kitten back to life. Oral medications. Eye salve. Hand Feedings. You name it and he did it. Well, Princess Peaches made a full recovery and surprised us this week with a litter of kittens. I called Granny to let her know of the miraculous delivery from the spayed cat she gifted our children without permission. Her reply? “Well...come to think of it now, they may have said that it NEEDED to be spayed.” Stayed tuned...this gift just keeps on giving!
Ok, friends....Give me all of your best advice! This project is about to wrap (concrete this week) and I want to know your favorites....best pool toy storage, must have furniture, favorite floats/games/toys, etc. What do you love...what do you hate?
