Three years. That’s how long I’ve been this little man’s forever mama. I was in love the moment I heard his name. Before I saw a picture. Before I heard about his past. It was his name. A baby named Bear. I waited all day to share the news with Dennis. When he got home from work, I told him about the surprise phone call, little man’s name and then held my breathe and waited for his reaction. Katie came home just 6 months before and I wasn’t sure how he would feel about back to back adoptions. He quietly walked to his office, sat down and opened his email. There was one small photograph. He barely glanced before saying...”Mama, that’s a good looking little man.” Well my friends, the rest is history and Bear became a Trusty three years ago today. *Photo taken in Zhengzhou China, 2015.
Almost a year ago, Granny B surprised my children with a stray kitten. Fun, right? The only issue... she didn’t talk to Dennis or I about this special gift. She told us it was spayed and the finder thought it was ready for a family. Granny volunteered us! How thoughtful. After Dennis and I finished arguing about who was going to tell her “No way..this wasn’t going to happen” we packed up our new kitten, along with our very happy children, and drove home from the farm. Days later, the kitty was knocking on death’s door with all 4 paws. Our veterinarian neighbor told us Princess Peaches probably wouldn’t make it through the weekend. Our very giddy children crumbled to pieces and begged us to do something for the cat. Dennis reluctantly volunteered and spent the next 6 weeks (and hundreds of dollars) nursing the quarantined kitten back to life. Oral medications. Eye salve. Hand Feedings. You name it and he did it. Well, Princess Peaches made a full recovery and surprised us this week with a litter of kittens. I called Granny to let her know of the miraculous delivery from the spayed cat she gifted our children without permission. Her reply? “Well...come to think of it now, they may have said that it NEEDED to be spayed.” Stayed tuned...this gift just keeps on giving!
Ok, friends....Give me all of your best advice! This project is about to wrap (concrete this week) and I want to know your favorites....best pool toy storage, must have furniture, favorite floats/games/toys, etc. What do you love...what do you hate?
Twenty years ago, I fell in love with this guy. Maybe it was the well worn concert t-shirt peeking out from his black leather jacket? Or, the way he nervously crammed his hands in his pockets when I spoke? It really doesn’t matter....because either way I was smitten with him. Curious how we met? Well, Dennis was acting wingman for a buddy who wanted me to be his date to a party. I agreed hoping the quiet wingman would be there. Scandalous. I know. Today marks our 17 year wedding anniversary and I’m still completely smitten with him.
Head on over to our family blog for our latest adventures. Details in the bio. #trustypartyofsix #amsterdam #london
Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mamas in my life. It’s such an honor to spend the day with Gran. She is amazing...seriously, just look at her. That’s the kindest face you will see this side of heaven. There are a million things that make her special but her true gift is making others feel important and loved. It doesn’t matter who you are, she gives her full heart and undivided attention to every conversation. That, my friends, is a rare thing these days.
I know what you’re thinking, you have to meet this gal! Right? You will find her rocking on the front porch all week long ..... or in the kitchen making dumplings and other southern blessings. Stop on by! She’s looking for someone to feed.
We celebrated this beauty yesterday! Happy 9th birthday, darling. Tender Heart. Flushed Cheeks. Delicate Hands. Big Smile. Rosie — you are a dream come true. #growinguptrusty #rosieroo #happybirthdaybaby
Four years ago today, I became the mama of this little one. Happy Family Day, Katie. I love you to China and Back! #growinguptrusty #foreverfamilyday #mommyandkatie
One day. That’s how long it took her to tan golden brown despite being dipped in sunblock. Her brother on the other hand, the handsome lad who is sporting sand safety googles, will need months of summer sun to catch up with her. #growinguptrusty #tanfran #byebyehiltonhead
Hey now! Look who is actually smiling on the beach! It’s my serious son Will and his not-so-serious sidekick, Kate. They used their vacation time working. I told them to take a break from the day-to-day grind....relax and just enjoy the sun. But they insisted on digging. So they dug. For seven straight days. #almosttochina #growinguptrusty #frickandfrack
Remember that bit about good things come to those who chance Hilton Head on spring break? Yeah...this happened. It only lasted a few days but it was sooo worth it! #growinguptrusty #rosieandjack
When it’s freezing at the beach...pile on ALL of your clothes and hunt for shells! Then, head to the neighboring indoor pool for hours of fun before fueling up with wood-fired pizza! Finally, put on pjs and build a lego creation with Dad before calling it a night. Hey, warm weather — we’re waiting for ya! But until then, we will continue having fun without you. #growinguptrusty #hhi
Mercy me! It’s cold but that hasn’t stopped us. We ate lunch at The Salty Dog, milled around Harbour Town and enjoyed the afternoon at Lawton Stables. I can’t believe it has taken 6 years and a chilly day to get us there. Three cheers for miniature donkeys! Looks like tomorrow is another cold one but warm weather is on the horizon and you know what they say! Good things come to those — who chance Hilton Head in the Spring! #growinguptrusty #hhi
Don’t be confused. This isn’t a cute little moo cow sitting at the foot of my bed. William told me he was a “daaaaangerous bull.” He told me to watch him kick — to listen to him moo. Next he asked that I watch him jump. Clapping at his stellar performance, I made a mental note of my child’s obvious giftedness. Clearly not getting the reaction he wanted he said, “Now watch me poop on your bed.” I looked at him confused and speechless. He smiled before saying “I’m just joking, mom. See ya later.” As he walked out the door, ears flopping, I grinned. I’m pretty sure that was his first joke. #growinguptrusty #williambeier
We saw Town Mouse/Country Mouse at the Indiana Repertory Theatre today! This cool excursion to the city ended with a cheese tasting. Fitting don’t ya think? 😂#growinguptrusty #townmousecountrymouse #cheesetasting
How many missing teeth you ask? Well, that’d be two on the bottom...and two on the top! Watching him eat dinner is the highlight of my evening! #growinguptrusty #toothlesswonder
Aren’t Sundays the best! The washing machine is humming — finally made it around to our bedding. It’s been a few weeks. Don’t judge. I’m listening to old church hymns in the background, making lunch and catching glimpses of my littles playing in the yard. This swing was a gift from our dear friend Denise and my, it is loved. Countless booties warm the reclaimed barn wood on a daily basis but no one does it like Jack. He flips. Hangs. Climbs. Stands. He goes all out boy on that thing...and it’s fun to watch. Every swing deserves to be loved this hard. #justjack #growinguptrusty #slowsunday @deniseharris6350
Check it out, friends! Not the hamburger. Nope, not the old time diner with a questionable name. The piggy tails — real deal, big girl piggy tails! #growinguptrusty #katiehui #piggytails #4yrsinthemaking
Curious George with my curious little monkeys! #growinguptrusty #monkeybusiness #loebtheatre
Meanwhile...over at Target the Trusty kids taught Mr. Jon (a stranger moments before) how to dab! So impressed by his skills, they also taught him “the stanky leg” and something that resembled breakdancing. Mr. Jon held his own but tapped out for the breakdancing bit! #growinguptrusty #beafriend #loveoneanother
